 Recreation & Arts

With our backdrop being the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, western North Carolina celebrates some of the best outdoor recreation anywhere in the United States. Whatever your outdoor recreational choice may be, western North Carolina has it.

The area boasts a large variety of recreational activities to include rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, water sports, fishing, hunting, and just about anything else you can imagine.

We are home to the Nantahala River and the Nantahala Outdoor Center, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, various mountain lakes (including Fontana Lake), the Tsali Recreation Center (regarded as the top mountain biking destination on the east coast), the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cherokee Indian Reservation, the most rugged section of the Appalachian Trail, and thousands of acres and miles of untouched mountain forests, rivers and streams.

We are only 25 miles from Western Carolina University (WCU). WCU is the most rapidly growing state university in the North Carolina University System. The University boasts a new $30 million dollar Fine and Performing Arts Center. The center combines state-of-the-art educational opportunities for students and instructors with a fresh and inspiring venue for world-class performers and artists.
