 Thomas Bunnow, MD

 His Practice:

“I have developed a passion for managing diabetic patients and the associated complications that always seem to accompany this complex disease. While these patients take more time to manage effectively, the rewards are immeasurable when I see their sugars drop dramatically in under one year. Like most other physicians, I am saddened to see obesity becoming ever more prevalent in our population, and struggle to find an effective solution/treatment plan that produces genuine results that are maintained over time. I’m trying to work only part time allowing more time with my gorgeous wife and two daughters teaching them everything about everything, but demands at work and the needs of the community constantly tug at my heart to do more.”

His Education:

Thomas Bunnow, M.D. initially started college as a nursing student, but switched to a premed curriculum based on recommendations from his advisor and redirection from God. He attended Northern Michigan University in pristine Marquette, Michigan from 1992-1995 where he graduated in 2 years 9 months summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology and physiology while also working full time as a Jet Engine Mechanic serving in the Air Force. He then took one year off to finish a 14 year service to the Air Force, said goodbye, and headed to the big city of Detroit, Michigan where he attended medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine, graduating in 2000. Then it was off to sunny Ventura, California for an intern year (and a half) at Ventura County Medical Center. After 3 additional years, he completed his residency in Family Practice in December 2003. His internship was extended 6 months due to a serious motorcycle accident. He is currently board certified in family practice and enjoys hospital privileges at both Swain County Hospital in Bryson City, NC and Harris Regional Hospital in nearby Sylva, NC. Thomas Bunnow is a 14 year veteran of the United States Air Force and has served 2 years in rainy England, and much shorter temporary duty assignments around the world including Australia, Thailand, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

His Interests:

“Aside of medicine and family, I admit to having a terrible obsession for cars, Jeeps, trucks, motorcycles, boats, and virtually anything utilizing a motor. I am particularly fond of a 69’ Dodge Charger R/T SE that I am currently restoring. I am also active in the Swain County Search and Rescue Squad where I currently preside as a board member. My family and I enjoy traveling, and over the past two years have been wandering over the southeast US in our worn, yet functional RV. We are also very active in our church in Sylva, NC and live to serve Christ to the best of our ability in all that we do.”
